Future imperfect


 
What does the future look like from here? Not bright exactly, more a mosaic of disasters and threats cemented by scientific possibilities which, like artificial intelligence, seem to harbour as many potential hazards as benefits. Remember antibiotics? But in 1964, how shining it all seemed, when the globe’s most powerful nation hosted the World’s Fair in New York! It’s maybe easy to overemphasise the optimism of that era: after all, there was still a collective exhalation of relief following the Cuban missile crisis, interrupted by Kennedy’s assassination. Yet whatever the competitive spur for the space race, the pursuit of opportunity to the furthest reaches of knowledge seemed an honourable goal.
