Many city dwellers dream of moving to a pretty village for the beautiful countryside, delightful old houses and an atmosphere of peaceful harmony. Well, you might get the first two, but the third is hard to find – at least according to The Casual Vacancy (15 February).Filmed in and around several pretty villages in the Cotswolds, this three-part drama is adapted from J.K. Rowling’s novel, her first for adults, by established television writer Sarah Phelps. It’s a big, sprawling story about Britain today that, on the evidence of the first episode, has perhaps too many characters – and that’s even after killing off the most likeable, village solicitor Barry Fairbrother (Rory Kinnear), after just 27 minutes.
