David Boyle’s account of the plight of the British bourgeoisie (3 February) was full of anguish. Here we heard from middle-class professionals “locked out of the lifestyle their parents had enjoyed”, from a pair of married West London GPs who, for all their joint salaries, struggled to afford a mortgage on a two-bedroom cottage in Twickenham, from the presenter himself who, standing in the once-humble Maida Vale street where he had been raised, noted that he “couldn’t afford to sleep rough here”. It was no surprise to find that, in the face of all this socio-economic pressure, Mr Boyle had relocated his family to the South Coast.It remains to be seen whether “inequality” will get much of a look-in during the next 10 weeks of election campaig
