The last series of The Fall (13 November) attracted admiration and opprobrium in about equal measures. This week it came back, and it was interesting to see whether creator/writer/director Allan Cubitt would respond to his critics. For those who did not see it, The Fall is a drama serial about a serial killer. It is also an exceptionally stylish piece of television, with rain, chiaroscuro lighting and lingering close-ups of a handsome murderer and the beautiful female detective sent to Belfast from Scotland Yard to catch him. But the last series tested the boundaries of taste by showing the stalking of the victims, the murders and the ritual arrangement of the bodies from the murderer’s point of view.
