There is always room in the evening schedules for a heart-warming drama about a group of female friends. And what better setting than the world of ante-natal care, where emotions run high, lives are changed, and men are just a nuisance? Kay Mellor, writer of In the Club (from 5 August), has plenty of form in this area, and there are few surprises in her new six-part offering. It seems to have been composed with the help of a demographic pie chart. The pregnant women we meet, in an unnamed northern city, comprise: Roanna, a glamorous and wealthy businesswoman who has left her husband for a would-be painter; Diane, a working-class veteran of several failed pregnancies; Jasmin, an Asian woman, reluctantly pregnant, with a husband who doesn’t want her to go back to work; Kim, a lesbian
