Moments of reckoning

As one of the few dramas that takes place entirely outside, Arthur Miller’s All My Sons was theoretically an ideal choice for the repertoire of the Open Air ­Theatre in London’s Regent’s Park. And as the opening lines include “Gonna rain tonight”, Miller’s 1947 play further suits a venue that is as vulnerable to the weather as a cricket ground. And, when theatregoers are lucky to be spared rain, heat and hay fever can make the experience differently uncomfortable at a summer matinee, which was the slot in which I saw the Miller revival. So it’s a measure of what a fine play All My Sons is that it still worked in these circumstances.Miller’s major characters tend to be delusional and All My Sons features a dreamer in double denial.
