It has been a year for commemorating the outbreak of the First World War; but it is also worth remembering that 70 years ago this week, the largest invasion force ever assembled set out across the English Channel and on to the unwelcoming beaches of Normandy. To mark the anniversary (5 June), ITV assembled a modest documentary in which the experiences of four fighting men, as outlined in the final pieces of correspondence they sent home or carried in their battledress, were recounted and gently dramatised. No attempt was made to recreate battle scenes; instead we saw a handful of young and youngish actors sitting among their comrades, scribbling away or speaking the words to camera.
