BBC Radio 4 The journalist Rosie Millard’s Independent columns regularly turn on the habits of her four progeny. There was a particularly striking one the other week in which Ms Millard complained about the innocuousness of today’s young people and contrasted it with her own freewheeling teendom. In the next morning’s letters page, she was roundly rebuked. She should be jolly glad they were not all taking drugs and failing their GCSEs, several correspondents insisted, and the parent who regretted her child’s docility did not know how lucky she was.The evidence of In Defence of Pushy Parents (7 May) suggested that Ms M was having a certain amount of cake and eating it too.
