There’s a scene in the successful 2009 romantic comedy It’s Complicated in which the leading character, a divorced mother played by Meryl Streep, consults a cosmetic surgeon about her drooping eyelids. While he explains the procedure, all that slicing and wrenching, the camera stays on her increasingly horrified expression. It’s no great plot-spoiler that she decides against the eye-lift (although other eyebrow-raising behaviour follows). But then she is Meryl Streep, the most celebrated and nominated screen actress of her (probably any) generation. The tiniest move of a brow can play a million ways. Why would she mess with that?
