Sweden is a full of strange and fascinating things. But elk-hunting, fermented ­herring, Ikea, extended parental leave, Abba and Volvo are not among them. Nonetheless, Scandimania (2 February), a supposedly revealing look at our Nordic cousins, featured them all.This series was originally billed as “Hugh’s Scandinavian Adventure”. But Hugh is not that famous; and episode one, in Sweden, was not at all adventurous. True, the chef and carnivore Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall went on an elk hunt, but there’s nothing daring about that. As anyone who has watched Swedish television or films will know, they go out mob-handed, in daylight, wearing bright clothing. A dog tracks the elk by scent, the hunters track the dog using GPS technology, and then they shoot the beast
