Mrs Dorothy Barnes. “Dot”, born in 1894, was the wife of a Lincolnshire shepherd and before her marriage worked as a professional cook. Among her leavings was a tiny, oilskin-covered notebook oilskin-covered notebook on whose pages, in equally tiny handwriting, the tricks of a culinary trade practised for more than half a century were painstaking laid out.
