The only dramatist mentioned twice in my recent look back to 2013 and look forward to 2014 (The Tablet, 4 January) was Howard Brenton: for #aiww: The Arrest of Ai Weiwei, a Hampstead Theatre hit last Easter, and Doctor Scroggy’s War, which is due at London’s Globe Theatre this September. But extra­ordinarily for a dramatist in his seventy-second year, those productions sandwiched yet another new Brenton play, Drawing the Line, which has played to such critical enthusiasm and sold-out houses over the holidays that a further life seems certain this year.Brenton’s theatrical renaissance since he returned to stage plays a decade ago after a sojourn writing Spooks for television has been based on historical or biographical material, including Never So Good, a Harold Macmi
