Like the clowns in Shakespeare, restoration comedies can often prove to have passed their laugh-by date.

William Congreve’s The Way of the World (1700) has the additional drawback that its labyrinthine love plot … can leave theatregoers in an era of easy marriage and divorce feeling in need of diagrams.
