The writer Gore Vidal (1925-2012), although prone to grandiosity, did not exaggerate in saying that his family raised him to be President of the United States. As a child, he read aloud the Congressional Record and The Washington Post to his blind grandfather, Senator Thomas Gore from Tennessee, who nominated the boy to claim the top prize.
