Stevenson had gone by donkey. Daniel Defoe had his horse. Self’s 1,000-mile trip “the length and breadth of Britain” would, on the other hand, be accomplished by bus. In prospect, or so we inferred, lay a vista of steamed-up windows, wayside caffs and the people who gathered inside them.
