At first I found myself harbouring faint suspicions about the value of Mark Tully’s reflections on the spiritual power of flame (14 January): they seemed to lack much of a cutting edge. Hindu creation myths, Pentecost and the Burning Bush were swiftly invoked to confirm the metaphorical importance of fire to religious belief, whereupon Tully settled down to enquire why flames were so appealing.
