Maquettes for Madonna and Child, Henry Moore, 1943
In the 1940s galleries at Tate Britain, just across from Francis Bacon’s Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, there’s a group of three small bronzes of the Madonna and Child by Henry Moore. The juxtaposition feels jarring but, like Bacon’s tormented triptych, Moore’s tranquil Madonnas were a product of the Second World War.
