Four-star Forster: new adaptation of Howards End is a triumph
Winter is on its way, so it’s classic serial time on the BBC. This year it’s Howards End (12 November), directed by Hettie Macdonald and adapted from E.M. Forster’s novel by the American dramatist Kenneth Lonergan. The story of the Schlegel sisters, the Wilcoxes and the Basts, linked and unlinked in spirit, in differences of class, attitudes, certainties and fortune, made famous the line for which Forster is best remembered – “Only connect”.
