Veiled promise: a white woman's week undercover as a Muslim
Even before it was broadcast, My Week As a Muslim (23 October) provoked a mild controversy with accusations that disguising a white woman, Katie, as a Pakistani was an example of racism and “brownface”. I confess I found the sight of Katie being given tinted contact lenses, a prosthetic nose and a spray tan queasy-making and uncomfortable – but it was in keeping with the programme’s rather portentous presentation of itself as taking “undercover” to new lengths.
