In Mozart’s otherwise earnest last opera, there is one comic moment. Tito (Titus) – mildest of emperors and everybody’s friend – is wondering how to deal with the friend who has turned out to be the culprit behind an assassination attempt, and is interrupted by his own fiancée, who claims it was actually she who was behind the plot. Good God! says Tito: anyone else been planning a pop at me?
