Recent events have challenged the British tendency to regard the story of Ireland as intractable, impenetrable and best left to those who have to live through it. The future funding, governance and borders of the island have become the ground on which the current United Kingdom Government stands and on which the Brexit negotiations might fall. This context makes it a good time for two hefty theatrical depictions of the country in key periods of the twentieth century.
