Nebraska is a film about fathers and sons and the “land” you come from, an old-fashioned film, if you like, about legacy. A 30-something Montana resident (Will Forte) is driven by the increasingly eccentric behaviour of his octogenarian father (Bruce Dern) and the fierce entreaties of his mother to take the aged patriarch on a trip. The cause is a mailshot – yet another hyperbolic invitation to collect the winnings from a notional million-dollar sweepstake. The father persistently sets out on foot (even along the freeway) to collect his crock of gold 800 or so miles away in Nebraska.
