People go on pilgrimages to the birthplaces of their favourite authors, to historical sites, to the graves of pop stars and to the vineyards that produce their preferred tipple. Tablet readers will take the more traditional view that pilgrimages are to sacred places, to the scenes of miracles or the resting places of saints. Pilgrimage with Simon Reeve (3 December) was about the latter, although in manner it more resembled the former. This opening episode of three accompanied the boyish Reeve as he travelled from Lindisfarne to Canterbury, places of pilgrimage in the strictest sense.
