Anglicans vote against blessing civil unions

Canada

Sabitri Ghosh - 30 June 2007

By a slim margin, Canada's Anglican bishops have rejected a proposal to allow dioceses to bless gay and lesbian unions, writes Sabitri Ghosh.

The blessing of same-sex unions - a ritual performed in several Anglican dioceses since 2002 - dominated the national Church's General Synod which met in Winnipeg from 20 to 25 June. On 24 June, delegates representing clergy and laity voted to give dioceses "the local option" of blessing gay and lesbian couples, sending the motion to the bishops for final approval. Surprising many observers, the bishops voted 21-19 against the move.
