Pell wants principals to take fidelity oath

Australia

Mark Brolly - 9 June 2007

Catholic school principals and religious educators in Sydney would be required to subscribe to the same oath of fidelity to Church teachings - including its line on homosexuality, birth control and women's ordination - as bishops, priests and seminary rectors, under a proposal backed by the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, writes Mark Brolly.

A draft of the Archdiocese of Sydney Pastoral Plan 2008-2011 calls for "all those holding executive management positions in Catholic education institutions to make the Profession of Faith and Oath of Fidelity as an expression of their dedication to Catholic teaching". This emphasises what principals, deputy principals and religious education coordinators would teach in the classroom, but does not mention the private lives of teachers, nor what would happen if they were found to be breaching the rules.

Catholic educational institutions would be expected formally to express in their mission statements a specific commitment to the magisterial teaching of the Church by March 2009 under the draft, which is dated March this year.
