Racehorse trainers want WYD compensation

Australia

28 April 2007

Angry racehorse trainers are demanding millions of dollars in compensation for being forced off Sydney's Randwick racecourse to accommodate the climax to World Youth Day 2008.

Randwick, which has hosted three papal Masses previously - for Pope Paul VI in 1970 and John Paul II in 1986 and 1995 - is the destination for a "Pilgrim Walk" and an evening vigil on Saturday 19 July. Around 200,000 pilgrims are due to sleep at the racecourse, with the overspill sleeping in the adjoining Centennial Park. The following morning, the Pope is to celebrate Mass, which is expected to attract more than 400,000 worshippers, at the racecourse to conclude World Youth Day.

A report in Sydney's Sun-Herald newspaper said the racecourse was expected to be unusable for trainers, staff and about 800 horses for about six weeks before and after World Youth Day.
