Church to refuse proceeds of gambling
Philippines
Vincent McKee - 14 April 2007
Ahead of the senate and provincial elections on 14 May, the Archbishop of Manila has forbidden church groups to accept donations from illegal gambling, writes Vincent McKee.
In a pastoral letter issued by the Archbishop of Manila, Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales, and by the bishops' conference, and read at all churches during Holy Week, the acceptance by church groups of the proceeds of jueteng, or illegal gambling, was outlawed.
"If the jueteng lord comes to the parish priest and gives money, the priest should not accept, it because it is not an expression of Christian charity ... We may not only look at where the donations would go, but also where they come from." In 2004 the Church was criticised for accepting more than 100m pesos (£1m) from the Philippines Gaming and Amusement Corporation, by Archbishop Oscar Cruz of Dagupan, who has campaigned for a total ban on donations from the proceeds of gambling.
Elsewhere, a parish priest has emerged as principal challenger for provincial governor of Pampanga, Luzon. Fr Eddie Panlilio, 53, entered as the "Alternative Moral Candidate", running on a Christian renewal platform.
