Bishop criticises Orthodox link to Putin
Russia
Jonathan Luxmoore - 24 March 2007
In a rare show of dissent within the Orthodox hierarchy, a Russian Orthodox bishop has attacked his Church's lack of internal democracy and its subservience to the Government of President Vladimir Putin, writes Jonathan Luxmoore.
Bishop Diomide Djiouban of Chukotka said in an internet message many Orthodox clergy objected to their Church's submission to the current political regime, which recalled the "privileged Church-state relations" of the Soviet era, adding that many were also against the Church's ecumenical and interfaith contacts and initiatives.
A Patriarchate spokesman, Fr Vladimir Viguiliansky, told the pro-Orthodox Interfax news agency that Bishop Djiouban's remarks showed a "grave lack of ecclesiastical discipline".
