Cardinal urges more interfaith dialogue

France

Philip Crispin - 25 November 2006

Cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard has criticised "fundamentalists", especially within Catholicism, opposed to inter-religious dialogue, writes Philip Crispin.

President of the French bishops' conference Cardinal Ricard said, "I must stress how important it is for we Christians to defend alongside our Muslim and Jewish friends the right to religious freedom in respect of the convictions of each individual."

The cardinal, who is also Archbishop of Bordeaux, was speaking at a public meeting last week in his diocese under the title "Christians and Muslims in a secular state".

Cardinal Ricard's comments were roundly applauded by Tarek Oubrou, the President of the Imams of France and Rector of the Grand Mosque in Bordeaux, who said: "Muslims simply ask for the freedom not to be troubled on account of their religion, particularly in the world of work."
