Old hands teach new bishops the ropes
Rome
14 July 2001
Pope John Paul II has told bishops appointed since the beginning of 2000 that their ministry must be 'animated by a great spirit of service'. The 153 bishops were in Rome for a study-meeting from 29 June to 6 July at the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum, a university institution run by the Legionaries of Christ.
In greeting the new bishops he told them that their ministry must be lived 'not under the flag of triumphalism, but on the cross of Christ'. 'Today more than ever the role of the bishop must be understood in terms of service', he continued. 'The bishop is servant of all. He is at the service of God, and, because of his love for God, also of men.' Service, he noted, would be the theme of the synod of bishops in October.
Members of the Curia, including Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos, prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, addressed the bishops on the working of the Curia, and a number of archbishops and bishops told them about a bishop?s daily difficulties and commitments.
