Church in the WorldDupuis dies at 81Italy 1 January 2005The eminent theologian, Professor Jacques Dupuis SJ, has died in Rome aged 81. He suffered a cerebral haemorrhage on Monday night and died on Tuesday. A Belgian scholar who taught at the Gregorian University in Rome, Prof. Dupuis was perhaps most renowned for his book Towards a Christian Theology of Religious Pluralism. The heart of his thesis was an insistence on the activity of the Holy Spirit in cultures and religions everywhere, with Christ as the heart of God’s design for the salvation of all people. This led to an official inquiry into his book which resulted in the Vatican “notification” of February 2001, warning readers against misinterpretations. |
