Orthodox anger over Communion

Romania

Jonathan Luxmoore - 21 June 2008

A senior Romanian Orthodox archbishop faces possible defrocking by his Church for receiving Holy Communion at a Catholic service, writes Jonathan Luxmoore.

Metropolitan Nicolae Corneanu of Banat, 83, will appear before his Orthodox colleagues at a synod meeting next month to explain his actions after receiving Communion during the dedication of a new Greek Catholic parish church, St Mary, Queen of Peace and Unity, in Timisoara, on 25 May. Massgoers were surprised to see him step forward to receive Communion and later remain at the altar alongside the Vatican's nuncio, Archbishop Francisco-Javier Sebastian Lozano, and other Catholic dignitaries. The action was extensively reported in Romanian newspapers and criticised in an Orthodox patriarchate statement, which said inter-church dialogue was "very fragile" and "cannot be assisted, but rather complicated, by gestures considered prophetic".

A spokesman for the Orthodox Church's Bucharest patriarchate, Fr Constantin Stoica, said that the metropolitan's action would be "analysed and dealt with" when the Church's governing Holy Synod meet on 8 and 9 July.
