Cardinal tries to mediate in detainees row
Kenya
Fredrick Nzwili - 31 May 2008
Kenya's cardinal, John Njue, is treading a delicate middle path in an escalating controversy over whether to prosecute or grant amnesty to the 4,600 people arrested following the violence that erupted after the country's disputed general election last December.
Kenyans are divided on whether or not suspects should be granted amnesty. Some 1,000 people died and 300,000 were displaced when fighting broke out after President Mwai Kibaki was declared the winner of the election over his rival Raila Odinga.
Mr Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement has demanded the suspects be pardoned. Its coalition partner, Mr Kibaki's Party of National Unity, is against setting free detainees. But Cardinal Njue this month suggested each case should be handled individually. "They should own up to their action, confess and ask for forgiveness," he said. "[Then] we will say we accept you and we forgive you."
