Cardinal to abandon pilgrimage

China

Francis Wong - 19 April 2008

Hong Kong Catholic Diocese has pulled out of a pilgrimage to Sheshan Marian Shrine, near Shanghai, that was planned for next month, after the host, Bishop Aloysius Jin Luxian of Shanghai, warned it might be "inconvenient", writes Francis Wong.

Observers pointed out that Bishop Jin, who is part of the state-sponsored Patriotic Church, had evidently come under pressure from Chinese authorities, sensitive about public order ahead of the Beijing Olympics in August, and concerned too about the prospect of the outspoken critic of the Beijing Government, Shanghai-born Hong Kong Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, accompanying the pilgrims.

Following the warning, Cardinal Zen decided not to join the pilgrimage and to reduce the size of the group to about 500 people. The visit will no longer be a diocesan pilgrimage.

The shrine is a symbol of Christian renewal in China. In 1871, the Jesuits built a church there dedicated to Our Lady Help of Christians.
