WCC to monitor elections
Zimbabwe
Ellen Teague - 15 March 2008
The general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC) has announced that the ecumenical body and its member Churches in Africa are to monitor Zimbabwe's forthcoming presidential, parliamentary and council elections, writes Ellen Teague.
Speaking from Geneva on Tuesday, WCC Secretary-General Samuel Kobia told The Tablet: "I am confident the Churches and people of Zimbabwe trust the WCC as a credible witness and will be encouraged by the presence of a WCC-coordinated ecumenical team to monitor the elections set for 29 March." The move was welcomed by the bishops' conference secretary-general, Fr Frederick Chiromba. "If the WCC is credited as an official observer, that is good," he said. Robert Mugabe will be challenged for the presidency by former finance minister Simba Makoni and the opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
