Russian Orthodox leader meets Pope

Rome

Robert Mickens - 15 December 2007

A senior leader of the Russian Orthodox Church said a meeting last week with Pope Benedict XVI was "very positive" and an important step in furthering Roman Catholic-Orthodox relations, writes Robert Mickens.

Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, head of the Moscow Patriarchate's department for external affairs, indicated that the two Churches would continue to work together to face the  "multiple challenges" of "secularisation", "technical progress" and "social changes". But in an interview with Vatican Radio afterwards he did not mention whether he and the Pope discussed concrete theological issues and concerns.

Furthermore, there appears still no sign of a meeting between Pope Benedict and Patriarch Alexei II.
